History

Stratford upon Avon was founded by the Saxons when they invaded what is now Warwickshire in the 7th century AD. The name Stratford is made up of Celtic and Saxon words. It was the straet ford that is the ford by the Roman road. Avon is a Celtic word meaning river or water.

At first Stratford upon Avon was a typical village but in the late 12th century it was transformed into a town. In the year 1196 King Richard I granted Stratford the right  to hold weekly markets.

Location

It is located in the Midlands in the county of Warwickshire. All forms of travel are available: road, train, bus and there are nearby airports at Birmingham (35 miles), Manchester (60 miles) and London Heathrow (95 miles).It is 2 hours away from London by car. Nowadays 5.5 million tourists visit per year.

Shakespeare's School and House.

William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) was born at Stratford-upon-Avon, as a kid he attended to King Edward VI Grammar School. The house he was born at is in Henley Street. This is preserved intact. Nowadays not only you can visit Shakespeare’s Birthplace but also Hear tales of Shakespeare’s family life and enjoy live theatre. The opening hours are: 9am-5.30pm Jul-Sep, to 5pm Oct-Jun.

Holy Trinity Church

The Collegiate Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Stratford-upon-Avon is a Grade I listed parish church of the Church of England in Stratford-upon-AvonWarwickshire, England. It is often known simply as Holy Trinity Church or as Shakespeare's Church, due to its fame as the place of baptism and burial of William Shakespeare. More than 200,000 tourists visit the church each year.

The past building dates from 1210 and is built on the site of a Saxon monastery. It is Stratford's oldest building, is situated on the banks of the River Avon, and is one of England's most visited churches.

Anne Hathaway's Cottage

It is a twelve-roomed farmhouse where Anne Hathaway, the wife of William

Shakespeare, lived as a child in the village of Shottery, about 1 mile (1.6 km)

west of Stratford-upon-Avon. Spacious, and with several bedrooms, it is
